Forgive Like Jesus Blake Jennings Master_Teacher   Notes Slides
To forgive is to let go of an offense; to let go of both my right to demand payment or punishment and my right to remember and rehearse the offense. But that's not easy for us - it's incredibly hard to forgive people like Jesus did. So Jesus gives us not only instruction but also motivation. He tells us to forgive one another because, first, we have already been forgiven infinitely more by God, and second, because withholding forgiveness will cost us greatly - God will withhold His forgiveness of us and will allow us to experience the pain and suffering that always accompany an unforgiving heart. So let us turn to Him and ask for help to forgive one another like Jesus did.

Forgive (and Give) Like Jesus Brian Fisher Master_Teacher Luke 17:3-5 Notes Slides
To forgive is to release the debt and to bestow blessing in its place. Through Jesus Christ, God has forgiven the debt of our sin which we could never repay, and blessed us with life everlasting. When we forgive others, we become like God, the Great Forgiver.

Am I Really Free or Has God Determined Everything? Matt Morton Tough_Questions   Notes Slides
The relationship between God's sovereignty and man's responsibility is a difficult issue to reconcile from the Scripture. We are going to examine two extreme options and then look at the Scripture for some biblical balance.

What Does the Bible Say About Homosexuality? Matt Morton Tough_Questions   Notes Slides
The challenge of homosexuality has created a great deal of confusion and pain within our culture and even within the church. How are we to respond to this issue in a way that is truthful but also compassionate, reflecting the Gospel of Jesus Christ? (NOTE: This talk deals with very mature topics and is not appropriate for children under the age of 12.)

Salt and Light Blake Jennings Master_Teacher Matthew 5:13-16 Notes Slides
Why are we here? What is our purpose on earth? Certainly not to have fun - there's way too much sin and brokenness and suffering in this world to buy that lie! Through two metaphors, Jesus our king reveals His purpose for our time on earth: to be the salt and the light of the world. But salt is only effective if it remains distinctively salty, and light is only effective if it's held up in view of those who live in darkness. So the goal for our church, for our kids, and for ourselves is to live lives that are both distinctly Christ-centered and fully engaged with the unbelieving world around us so that all may come to know and glorify God.

Reflecting Jesus Brian Fisher Master_Teacher Matthew 5:10-16 Notes Slides
When we choose to live according to the paradoxes given by Jesus in the Beatitudes, we can expect suffering. These principles are so entirely contrary to the world's values that we should anticipate not praise but persecution. And when persecuted, as we respond like Jesus, we reveal truth and life to the world. This is our calling as citizens of the kingdom of heaven.

What Does the Bible Say About Homosexuality? Trey Corry Tough_Questions Genesis 1-2 Notes Slides
The Bible clearly lays out that Christ has paid the penalty for the sin of homosexuality (like every other sin) and also frees one from its power (like every other sin). Unfortunately, confusion and hostility towards this particular sin struggle has often left many struggling with it feeling unaccepted by self-righteous Christians. So we take a look at what homosexuality is, what causes it, whether its sinful, and how one begins to change and find freedom from it. (NOTE: This talk deals with very mature topics and is not appropriate for children under the age of 12.)

What Does the Bible Say About Life? Matt Morton Tough_Questions   Notes Slides
The Bible is clear that God places a high value on all human life. Our worth is not determined by our mental or physical capacity, but instead by the fact that God's image resides in us. This has significant implications for current issues such as abortion and euthanasia.

Pray Like Jesus - Part 2 : The Lord's Prayer Blake Jennings Master_Teacher Matthew 6:9-13 Notes Slides
The Lord's prayer gives us not a formula to memorize, but a model to guide all of our prayers. This model teaches us to begin our prayers with worship and submission. Yes, God is our loving Father, but He is also our holy King. We exist to serve Him, not the other way around. Having begun with worship and submission, Jesus teaches us to then confidently ask God to provide for all of our needs, both physical and spiritual. Because God is our holy King and loving Father, we can depend upon Him to meet our every need.

What Does the Bible Say About Life? Trey Corry Tough_Questions   Notes Slides
The Bible is clear that God places a high value on all human life. Our worth is not determined by our mental or physical capacity, but instead by the fact that God's image resides in us. This has significant implications for current issues such as abortion and euthanasia.

Blessed By God - Part 2 Brian Fisher Master_Teacher Matthew 5:7-12 Notes Slides
The Beatitudes represent Jesus Christ's most succinct explanation of the abundant life, the life blessed by God. Consistent with Jesus' revelation of truth, the Beatitudes contain several of life's great paradoxes - blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are those who mourn, blessed are the persecuted. It takes great faith to discover these great blessings!

What Does the Bible Say About Sex? Trey Corry Tough_Questions 1 Corinthians 6:12-21 Notes Slides
God intended sex to be a wholistic exchange of all of life between two intimately known and deeply committed people within marriage. God intended sex to provide a picture of Him, procreation, and pleasure and yet it was to require great self-sacrifice and self-control. In a culture that has become obsessed with the pleasure that sex provides they have pursued an experience of sex that is so far different than what God intended and it has left us more hurting, used, and lonely than ever before. [NOTE FOR PARENTS: This sermon is not appropriate for children under 12 years of age.]

What Does the Bible Say About Sex? Matt Morton Tough_Questions   Notes Slides
God created sex to be much more than a physical act. His plan is perfect, but we have failed in so many ways. Nonetheless, there is grace and forgiveness in Jesus Christ. [NOTE FOR PARENTS: This sermon is not appropriate for young children under 12 years of age.]

Pray Like Jesus - Part 1 Blake Jennings Master_Teacher   Notes Slides
As we study the prayer life of Jesus (the attitudes, actions, and habits that guided His prayers) four characteristics stand out. First, Jesus often let prayer trump sleep even though He knew better than we do how much our bodies needs rest. Second, Jesus loved to pray in the wilderness, in a place free of the distractions of life. Third, Jesus prayed with perseverance and repetition; asking for something once simply was not enough for Jesus. Finally, Jesus prayed as if He believed that heaven and hell were on the line; as if He believed that prayer could actually change things in eternally significant ways.

Blessed By God - Part 1 Brian Fisher Master_Teacher Matthew 5:1-6 Notes Slides
Can you imagine not needing, or even wanting, anything else in life? Can you imagine being fully and completely satisfied, perfectly content, and overflowing with joy? Jesus, in His first sermon recorded by Matthew, reveals just such a life - the life blessed by God. But you had better prepare yourself - it's probably not what you were expecting.

Prescription for Peace Don Breland Master_Teacher Matthew 6:25-34 Notes Slides
The pace of today's life confronts us with large doses of stress. Our worry over these stressful situations tends to rob us of the peace that could be ours. Christ, in this portion of the sermon on the mount, tells how to regain and sustain that peace.

More to This Life Gary DeSalvo AdditionalSermons Ecclesiastes 2:1-26 Notes
As one teen said, 'Solomon had it all...brains, bucks and babes!' Yet Solomon concluded, 'Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.' In his search for meaning in life, Solomon turned to a self-indulgent lifestyle and then to a realistic analysis of life and death. For all of us who have thought that happiness is only a lottery ticket away or that wisdom alone is the answer to life's emptiness, Solomon says 'think again!' He concludes that apart from the giver of the gifts of life, life is 'vanity and chasing after the wind.' Without God life and labor is futile, with Him 'there is more to life.'

What does Jesus say about Worry? Joel Mathai Master_Teacher Matthew 6:25-34 Notes Slides
While examining Jesus' teaching on Worry from the Sermon on the Mount, we find three reasons why we as believers should not worry: 1. We should not worry because of who God is, his character and person. 2. We should not worry because of who we are, in Christ. 3. We should not worry because of the promises in God's Word.

Why is there so much evil and suffering in the world? Trey Corry Tough_Questions 1 Peter 1:3-9 Notes Slides
This difficult question arises not in classrooms and textbooks but bedside in hospitals, graveside at funerals, and in the arms of those hurting. In those places, one grasps that suffering is predictable (inevitable and even a privilege) and purposeful (not pointless and random) to highlight our hope, change our character, intensify our intimacy with the Lord, and extend our empathy.

Why is there so much evil and suffering in the world? Matt Morton Tough_Questions   Notes Slides
How do we handle the fact that there is so much evil and suffering in the world? If God is good and sovereign, why doesn't He put a stop to all of it? How are we supposed to respond to trials and suffering in our lives?

Hosea: A Love Story Gary DeSalvo AdditionalSermons Hosea 1-3 Notes
The prophecy of Hosea is painful! It is painful because its story is all too real in our world! Spurned by his wife, Hosea's family becomes an object lesson of God's intense love for His people...for us! If you've ever been rejected by another or been the prodigal, Hosea will bring back memories that only God's grace can heal! Feel the pain of rejection and experience the thrill of reconciliation as we look at Hosea together!

Samson: A He-Man with a She Weakness Gary DeSalvo AdditionalSermons Judges 13-16 Notes
His resume is impressive! Killed a lion with his bare hands ... slaughtered thirty Philistines alone ... defeated a thousand-man army with the jawbone of a donkey ... destroyed the city gates of Gaza! But just as Superman was vulnerable to kryptonite, so Samson had a chink in his armor. He was king of the hill when it came to physique and strength, but he was a pawn in the hands of women! God's grace is evident throughout the story of Samson as He overcomes Samson's sin to accomplish His purposes!

The Erosion of Faith Gary DeSalvo AdditionalSermons 2 Chronicles 24-26 Notes
Many of the kings of Israel were 'royal failures'. Like sand on the seashore, their faith eroded over time. How do we keep our faith from eroding?

Is the Bible Reliable? Trey Corry Tough_Questions 2 Peter 1:16-21 Notes Slides
Objections regarding whether the Bible was preserved accurately over time, originally recorded with historical accuracy, and scientifically plausible necessitate that we have an explanation that maintains our assurance in the inerrant and inspired Word of God. For the Bible lands us at the feet of Jesus for salvation, conviction, and preparation for every good deed.

Is the Bible Reliable? Matt Morton Tough_Questions   Notes Slides
Is the Bible a trustworthy document or merely a human book? How do we know that we can trust it as the inerrant and infallible Word of God?

Wage War Like Jesus Blake Jennings Master_Teacher Matthew 4:1-11 Notes Slides
We are at war, whether we realize it or not. The enemy we face is supernaturally powerful, skilled in the art of deception, and more aware of our weaknesses than we are. But we can stand successfully against Satan's attacks if we follow the example of Jesus.

In His Steps Brian Fisher Master_Teacher Matthew 3:13-17 Notes Slides
Jesus Christ marked out a pattern for us to follow. In surrendering His will to the Father, He showed us what it can and should look like for a man or a woman to walk according to the direction of and in the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Gospel According to Jesus Blake Jennings Master_Teacher   Notes Slides
Jesus' words are life and truth, yet many of them are incredibly hard to understand! Why does He call a Gentile woman a 'dog' in Matthew 15? Why does He tell the rich young ruler that eternal life is gained by obeying the Law and selling all of one's possessions? Why does Jesus' gospel emphasize works rather than faith? We will never understand the teachings of Jesus unless we are willing to become diligent students of the Word of God; students who are capable of skillfully studying the words and context of Scripture.

Does Absolute Truth Exist? Trey Corry Tough_Questions   Notes Slides
While many hold that absolute truth claims create a religious exclusivity that is both dangerous and untrue, there is an absolute necessity for externally revealed truth due to the flawed and finite nature of man who neither can intuit truth within nor respond appropriately to truth seen in Creation. As a result, we have a responsibility to know His spoken word better and to proclaim it boldly.

Does Absolute Truth Exist? Matt Morton Tough_Questions   Notes Slides
The concept of absolute truth has fallen on hard times in our postmodern society. However, truth is inescapable and necessary if we are to have any concept of how we ought to live. The Scripture is very clear that truth exists in moral and religious matters, and that truth is found in Jesus Christ.

Bread of Life Trey Corry College_Life John 6:48-66 Notes Slides
With the beginning of a new semester, John 6 provides us a reminder of the fundamentals of the Spiritual Life. Specifically, we see that Jesus provides life (sustenance, satisfaction, and salvation) through his substitutionary death as the giver of life.

Becoming God's Vessel Matt Morton College_Life 2 Timothy 2:20-26 Notes Slides
As followers of Christ we are called to be His vessels to share the Gospel with the world. The Scripture exhorts us to set ourselves apart to be holy vessels, completely devoted to His cause.

On EARTH as it is in HEAVEN Chris Pletcher AdditionalSermons   Notes Slides
1 John 4:9 says, 'God sent His only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him.' Throughout the New Testament, it is clear that Jesus was sent to give us access to a new and eternal kind of life that begins right now. This new and abundant life would be characterized by knowing God (Intimacy) and learning to live like Jesus (Imitation). But we will not passively experience this new life. This sermon will explore how we participate with God to 'take hold of the eternal life to which [we] have been called.' 1 Timothy 6:12.

Lessons in Faith Buck Anderson AdditionalSermons Hebrews 11:1-6 Notes Slides
Christians whose faith is great recognize Jesus Christ as the all-authoritative and all-sufficient Lord that He really is and depend on Him accordingly.

Gifted to Serve Blake Jennings AdditionalSermons 1 Corinthians 12 Notes Slides
God has supernaturally gifted every believer and this gifting makes us each absolutely unique. Our unique gifting is absolutely essential to the health and growth of our church, and as each of us uses our unique gifting, we bring great glory to God. So let us make 2010 the year we each step up, discover, develop, and use our supernaturally powerful spiritual gifts to serve God's people for God's glory.

Preoccupied with Jesus Brian Fisher AdditionalSermons John 12:1-8 Notes Slides
A life preoccupied with Jesus is a life of worship. This is the life whose central focus is Jesus, with all other matters are arranged around Him. Mary's life illustrates such a life for us, both the sacrifices required and the rich reward.

Are You Ready for Christmas? Brad Evans AdditionalSermons John 1:1-18 Notes Slides
The Apostle John (the 'beloved disciple') writes about his personal experience with Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God. John summarizes his introduction to the Gospel with 'And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us...' (John 1:14)

The Real Story of Christmas Joel Mathai AdditionalSermons Isaiah 9:6 Notes Slides
The real story of Christmas is an amazing act of God involving a host of events, perfectly synchronized, exhibiting the sovereignty of God and the Grace of God.

Our Greatest Problem Solved Blake Jennings Galatians Galatians 5:16-23 Notes Slides
The greatest problem that believers face in life: we know what we ought to do, but we don't do it. We know what's right, what's good for us, what God expects of us as His children. Yet so often we fall short. In fact, if left to our own resources, we will always fall short because we are still sinners by nature; we are still powerless to overcome the sinful leading of our flesh. But thank God that He has not left us alone in this struggle! He's given us His Almighty Spirit who can overcome the desires of our flesh and produce righteous actions and attitudes in our lives. But we must choose to cooperate. We must walk in His power and presence through faith, obedience, and practice.

The Work of Christ, Beginning to End: Conclusion to Series on Galatians Brian Fisher Galatians Galatians Notes Slides
Galatians is not simply about the gift of Christ received through "justification" by faith. Galatians is not only, or even primarily, about doctrine. Galatians is about the church. The work of Christ was and is the solution for the twin problems of the flesh that the Galatians, and the church today, were wrestling with - legalism and license. Through His work we have been set free from the penalty of sin, and we have been set free from the power of sin through His indwelling Spirit, so that we are free to love one another and thereby reflect the very character of Christ.

Waiting for a King Matt Morton Joshua_Judges_Ruth Judges 21:25 Notes Slides
Jesus Christ is the King for which the world has awaited since its beginning. The history of the Old Testament is of a people and a world awaiting a righteous and perfect King.

The Perfect Deliverer Jon Yeager Joshua_Judges_Ruth Romans 3:23-25 Notes Slides
Looking at the Book of Judges, we witness the failed attempts by the Judges to fully deliver Israel, which ultimately points us to need of Jesus Christ. Looking at Christ in light of the Judges, we can see how He has become our perfect deliverer.

Free to Love Blake Jennings Galatians Galatians 5:1-15 Notes Slides
Believers face a choice between three competing ways-of-life. The first, legalism, seeks to earn favor with God through self-effort. The second, license, seeks to satisfy the desires and cravings of our fallen human nature. Yet as opposite as these two ways-of-life sound, both lead to pain and destruction in our lives and harm those around us. Fortunately, there is a better way, the way of love. As we serve the needs of others in love we build one another up and fulfill all that God intended in the Law.

A Crisis of Character: The Life of Samson Matt Morton Joshua_Judges_Ruth Judges 13-16 Notes Slides
The life of Samson is a vivid illustration of the devastating consequences of ability without character.

You Who Are Spiritual Brian Fisher Galatians Galatians 5:24-6:10 Notes Slides
There is a natural order in the universe that cannot be violated without consequence. This natural order covers not just the physical but also the spiritual. When we "sow" (feed, invest in, nurture, etc.) the flesh (our innate drive to live independently from God), life won't work right. However, when we "sow" to the Spirit (orient our lives around listening to and following God's Spirit), our lives will display the fruit of the Spirit, especially a love for one another that helps one another become and grow as "spiritual" people.

Crash and Burn!: The Life of Samson Trey Corry Joshua_Judges_Ruth Judges 13-16 Notes Slides
As the book of Judges ends and the nation of Israel's descent into depravity deepens, Samson's life demonstrates the extent to which sin can destroy the people of God. Specifically, Samson's life reveals that while sin's destruction doesn't discriminate based on potential or promise and isn't immediate, it does lead to unending torture. Samson will realize in the end that the only strength against sin is in his weakness.

Giving Thanks Kevin Barra AdditionalSermons Luke 17:11-19 Notes Slides
Giving thanks is the natural response as we realize our need and recognize that God satisfies. Take a look at how we often overlook this simple truth.

Sons and Heirs Blake Jennings Galatians Galatians 3:26-4:7 Notes Slides
By faith, not by works, we are all equally sons of God and fellow-heirs with Jesus Christ of the infinite blessings of God. Far from just a theological truth, being a son and heir of God brings peace, hope, joy, purpose, and growth to our lives. In fact, absolutely everything we need in this life is already ours as sons and heirs of God. And to enjoy these rich blessings, all we need to do is simply spend time in the presence of our Heavenly Father, our perfect 'papa' ('Abba').

Unity with a Purpose Matt Spinelli College_Life John 17:21-23 Notes Slides

International Stock Trey Corry College_Life Colossians 1:3-6, Philippians 1:3-6 Notes Slides
In light of the fact that God has begun a great work amongst the nations and will surely finish it at the climax of human history as men and women from every ethnic people group surround the throne of God in worship, it seems only appropriate that we participate in this great venture. In fact, few ventures are such a worthy investment and come at such a strategic time in our lives!

A Good Samaritan Approach to Missions Jamey Bryant College_Life Luke 10:25-37 Notes Slides

Also, hear from representatives from our three missions partnership locations in North Africa, Greece, and East Asia about opportunities to be involved in God's mission.

Finding True Success Matt Morton Joshua_Judges_Ruth Judges 8:22-9:57 Notes Slides
The final years of Gideon's life serve as a cautionary tale for those who would seek personal ambition apart from submission to God. When we submit our ambitions to His glory, He can use us in significant ways. When we seek personal gain instead, we can leave behind a trail of corruption and devastation.

Husbands, Love Your Wives Brad Evans Family Ephesians 5:33 Notes Slides
In Ephesians 5:33, husbands and wives are instructed to fulfill their biblical roles. This week, we will look at the husband's responsibility and high calling to love (with the agape, divine form of love) his wife as Christ loves His Bride, the Church.

Freedom, Not Flesh Brian Fisher Galatians Galatians 5:13-26 Notes Slides
We are now free from the Law and the sin it elicits through Jesus Christ, our Emancipator. However, this is not a freedom to follow the lusts of the flesh, but a freedom to be and to become, to speak and to act, to feel and to fulfill all that God has created us for in Christ Jesus. This freedom can be summed up in a word - love.

From Weakling to Warrior Matt Morton Joshua_Judges_Ruth Judges 7 Notes Slides
God teaches Gideon that in order to do something great for the Lord, he must first submit to Him. God patiently and persistently transforms us into the men and women He desires us to be.

The Family - God's Original Small Group Brad Evans Family Genesis 2:18-25 Notes Slides
Small groups are very important to the church. They provide an environment where we develop community with one another, live out the 'one another commandments' (love one another, pray for one another, etc.), study God's Word together...all for the purpose of growing in Christ-likeness. The family IS God's original small group, and these small group dynamics should also be happening in our homes. Instead of just 'out-sourcing' the spiritual growth of our children to the paid professionals, we need to own the responsibility of intentionally developing our children and seeing God grow them toward maturity. For this to take place, we must first and foremost have strong and Christ-focused marriages. The relationship between a husband and wife is the most important relationship in the family.

Grace at First Sight Trey Corry Joshua_Judges_Ruth Ruth 2 Notes Slides
With every support and security stripped away from their lives, Naomi and Ruth search and find security in Ruth 2. The passage teaches that grace is undeserved kindness, comes from God sovereignly, must be received in humility and faith, and should be then given away wastefully!

Choose Freedom Brian Fisher Galatians Galatians 5:1-12 Notes Slides
For believers, slavery to legalism is a choice. Living under the Law renders ineffective the power of God's grace in our daily lives. We have been set free by Jesus Christ to become and to do all that God has created us for. So choose freedom.

Who? Me, God? Matt Morton Joshua_Judges_Ruth Judges 6:1-32 Notes Slides
God chooses to redeem Israel and the world by using weak men and women to do his will. Have you embraced God's call upon your life to be an agent of deliverance and reconciliation to God?

Who Is In Control? Brian Fisher Galatians Galatians 4:8-31 Notes Slides
Paul continues his argument that there are only two pathways for life - following the Spirit with confidence in Christ, or enslavement to the flesh because of confidence in self. Paul's appeal for Christ is both personal and passionate. It is also applicable to us today. Will we bend low, every day, and walk according to the humble example of the Savior? Will we find power in submitting our wills to the will of God, or will we continue with vain and foolish attempts to live independently from God?

Don't Forget to Remember Chris Pletcher AdditionalSermons Psalm 106:7-21 Notes Slides
We are a forgetful people. It is far to easy for us to lose sight of who God is and what He has done in our lives. The people of Israel in the Old Testament provide a perfect example of the consequences of such forgetfulness. If we learn from their mistakes, we can grow as people who practice gratitude and remembrance so that we will not lose sight of our Great God and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Desert Survival Matt Morton College_Life Psalm 63 Notes Slides
Every Christian has times in which we feel distant from the Lord for various reasons. Psalm 63 gives us an example of how King David handled such a time in his own life, and some principles that we can emulate.

God, Our Father Brian Fisher Galatians Galatians 3:26-4:7 Notes Slides
If you are in Christ, you are in God's family. If you are in Christ, then you share in His inheritance - promised to Abraham, given to Jesus, passed on to us. As children of God we now enjoy an intimacy with our heavenly Father never before imagined. As little children, He welcomes our impassioned cry, "Abba, Daddy!"

Goodbye to the Nanny Blake Jennings Galatians Galatians 3:15-25 Notes Slides
We are justified (declared righteous in God's sight) and sanctified (grown in spiritual maturity) by faith alone, not by obedience to the Law. So why did God give us the Law? Is the Law a bad thing? Is the Law worthless? Absolutely not! The Law is a gracious gift from God that played an incredibly significant role in the life of the nation of Israel and in lives of all men and women who don't yet know Jesus. But now that we are united to Jesus by faith, it's time to move beyond the rules and regulations of the Law into the freedom and joy of walking by the Spirit.

No More Nanny! Matt Morton Galatians Galatians 3:15-25 Notes Slides
Now that we have received the promises of eternal life and righteousness before God through faith alone, we no longer need a list of regulations such as the Law to tell us how to live. We live by obedience to the Spirit instead, because He is sufficient to teach us to obey.

Great Leaders and Lost Opportunities Kevin Barra Joshua_Judges_Ruth Judges 4 Notes Slides
The time of Judges was a period when Godly Leaders were scarce; this is still true today. If leaders will lead toward God people will follow, but unfortunately when leaders leave God people follow as well. God desires to raise Leaders that hear His voice, follow His lead, and fight the battles He is asking them to fight. See how two woman, Deborah and Jael stood and fought well.

Moving Towards Our Identity Jon Yeager College_Life Hebrews 13:9-16 Notes Slides
Christ is our sacrifice that sets us apart, so that we can offer our lives, our praise, and our love towards people.

What Do You Worship? Matt Morton Joshua_Judges_Ruth Judges 2:6-23 Notes Slides
Idolatry is the substitution of anything else in our lives in the place of God. The book of Judges demonstrates the terrible consequences when God's people stop obeying Him and choose to worship idols.

Sola Fide Blake Jennings Galatians Galatians 3:1-14 Notes Slides
There exist just two fundamental ways we can live out our lives on earth: we can rely on our works to earn us points with God, or we can rely on faith in the finished work of Christ. This is true of both our justification (the beginning our relationship with God), and our sanctification (the ongoing process of transformation into the image of Christ). The way of works leads only to the curse of God while the way of faith leads to blessing, freedom, and joy.

The Blessing of Abraham Brian Fisher Galatians Galatians 3:1-14 Notes Slides
There exist just two fundamental ways we can live out our lives on earth - confident in ourselves, or confident in Christ. This is true of justification (the beginning our relationship with God), and it is equally true of sanctification (the ongoing process of transformation into the image of Christ). Which pathway will you choose?

Perils of Idolatry Trey Corry Joshua_Judges_Ruth Judges 2:6-23 Notes Slides
With the death of Joshua, a new generation of Israelites arises who forsake the God of their fathers for the gods of the Canaanites. The opening introduction to Judges shows the nature, motivation, and surprising devastation that result from false worship of idols in one's life!

Is the Gospel Worth Fighting For? Brian Fisher Galatians Galatians 2:11-21 Notes Slides
Justification - God declaring a person to be in right relationship with Him. Does this declaration occur through faith alone in the work of Christ only, or must we also do some form of good works? Even the most eminent of Christians (Peter, for example) can fall prey to the deceit that somehow we can add to the work of Christ. Thank God that on that all important day, we must only plead the blood of Jesus Christ. His work on our behalf - full, final, forever.

Nowhere to Hide Matt Morton Joshua_Judges_Ruth Joshua 7-8 Notes Slides
Sin in the life of God's people has devastating and tragic consequences. However, if we confess our sin and turn from it, God will show mercy.

Keeping the Gospel Clear Blake Jennings Galatians Galatians 2:11-21 Notes Slides
Justification is God's declaration that a person "measures up" in His sight. It is through justification that we find forgiveness of our sins and enter into an eternal relationship with God. But how do we become justified? Is it through faith alone in the work of Jesus alone, as Paul proclaims? Or, as Peter and so many Christians down through the centuries have taught, must we add our good works to our faith to earn justification?

Conquest of Jericho Trey Corry Joshua_Judges_Ruth Joshua 6 Notes Slides

Grace: Proven by its Power Blake Jennings Galatians Galatians 1:11-2:10 Notes Slides
Paul's life proved that the gospel of grace was from God - it was the real thing, the genuine article, the one and only way of salvation. Nothing but the supernatural grace of God could have redeemed such a violent and self-righteous man and transformed him into the greatest apostle and preacher to the Gentile world. Paul's life proves to us that no one is beyond the reach of the gospel, and no one is beyond the power of God's grace in Jesus Christ. Do you believe this about yourself? Do you believe it on behalf of others?

The Gospel Under Siege Blake Jennings Galatians Galatians 1:1-10 Notes Slides
There is just one work, and one work only, that can bring us into a right relationship with God and with one another. It is the work of Christ - His voluntary offering of His own life as a payment for our sins and guarantee of eternal life with God. However, this one true gospel has been, and always will be, under attack from those who want to add to the finished work of Christ, and in so doing destroy the unity of God's family. We must guard the gospel. We must proclaim the gospel - simply, truthfully, powerfully.

Who are we and what are we called to do? Blake Jennings AdditionalSermons Luke 4; 15; 19 Notes Slides
Grace Bible Church is not just a place to be seen on Sunday mornings - we're a community of Christ-followers founded 40 years ago on four pillars and one foundational strategy. These make up our DNA; they make us who are and guide everything we do. And for all of us who desire to belong to this church, to call it home, these four pillars and one strategy tell us who God has called each of us to become and what He's called us to do.

[Parents, please note that this sermon is not appropriate for children under 12 years of age.] Sexual sin, especially pornography, affects all of us, whether we're falling to it ourselves or have a spouse, parent, child, or friend who is falling to it. But for too long we've allowed it to remain the 'elephant under the rug' at church; we've avoided talking about a sin that's tearing apart our families, our churches, and our nation. But no longer. This morning we'll openly discuss the dangers of pornography and learn from the book of Proverbs how to resist it and how to protect our kids and loved ones from it.

The Wisdom of Surrender Brian Fisher Wisdom_Literature Psalm 2 Notes Slides
It is tempting to think that if we could just be free from all authority in our lives, if we could achieve complete independence with no one telling us what to do, then we could be happy. In fact, that is the first temptation that tripped up Adam and Eve, sending them tumbling out of the garden. The truth is, our greatest blessing, joy and security is found in absolute surrender to the Sovereign of the universe. This is a great paradox - freedom through slavery to a good and gracious Master.

How Great is our God Joel Mathai Wisdom_Literature Psalm 139 Notes Slides
Psalm 139 is one of the most comprehensive, deeply theological, penetrating, soul searching and convicting passages of the Old Testament. As we examine this marvelous piece of Hebrew poetry we find, four truths about God that should result in our obeisance. God is omniscient, he is omnipresent, he is omnipotent and he is all-righteous. This intensely personal passage of scripture, will in the end lead you to search your own heart and worship this great God as did David.

Who Are You? Jerry Varghese Miracles Matthew 15:21-28 Notes Slides
This passage of scripture is often difficult to understand because of Jesus' word choice to the Canaanite woman. When we dig a bit deeper we find that His words are not as harsh as they come across to the modern English reader and the ensuing miracle will validate that God hears the genuine cry of faith.

By whose agenda are you living? Joel Mathai Wisdom_Literature Proverbs 3:5-6 Notes Slides
It is good, once in a while, to pause and reflect on your life. Does my life make any difference to anyone at all? Most of us seem to leave God out of the daily equation and only call on him when we need him. As we continue the Wisdom Series this summer, I want to suggest we follow Solomon's exhortation in Proverbs 3 and live according to God's agenda. This involves a complete trust in Him on a daily basis. We can confidently trust God because he is sovereign and because he is good and only desires good for us. Like the old hymn goes, all we need to do is trust and obey.

The Way of Wisdom: Making Decisions Within The Will of God Brian Fisher Wisdom_Literature Proverbs 2:1-11 Notes Slides
We all want to know the will of God, but many times understanding His mind on a matter seems confusing at best. We must remember that wisdom is a way of life, not an isolated event. We begin by obeying what has been clearly revealed, then we take advantage of all other sources God has provided for us. And then, at the point of decision we have to remember that our confidence is not in our own decision-making ability, rather our confidence is in the sovereign and good Master whom we follow.

Life in Vanity Fair - An Overview of Ecclesiastes Blake Jennings Wisdom_Literature Ecclesiastes Notes Slides
Few books of the Bible speak as honestly and powerfully as Ecclesiastes to the doubt, cynicism, and despair that characterize our times. Solomon wrote the first twelve and a half chapters in the midst of what we might call a mid-life crisis, a time of incredible disillusionment and depression. With insight and wisdom he sees accurately the profound brokenness of this world and our inability to fix it. He learns that nothing in this world can ever satisfy our craving for more, and that all the pleasures and pursuits of this life ultimately end in death. Fortunately, the book doesn't end on this despairing note, for years later Solomon returns, wiser and more clear-headed, to write a six-verse conclusion that gives us hope and meaning even in the midst of life's disappointments.

Scriptural Directives for Fathers Joel Mathai AdditionalSermons Ephesians 6:1-4 Notes Slides
The world today is pulling at our kids - and pulling hard. Children need the help of parents even though they may not ask for it. The primary responsibility for proper parenting falls upon the father as leader in the home. The biblical task of the father is to nurture his children, teaching them to love and obey God. Children are a serious responsibility. At the very beginning of history when God created this world he proclaimed that - it is not good for man to be alone, and thru Adam he created the institution of family. Families are the soul of a nation. In our own nation many fathers have forsaken their God-given responsibilities to their children.

The Art of Skillful Living Brad Evans Wisdom_Literature Proverbs 1:1-7 Notes Slides
This summer we have selected messages from 'Wisdom Literature' (Job, selected Psalms, and the writings of Solomon). In Proverbs, Solomon is writing a 'parenting manual' that contains God's wisdom and is intended to be intentionally passed on to the next generation of leaders. Solomon also reminds us that the foundation or beginning point of wisdom is our world view. 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom' (Prov. 9:10). The wise maxims that Solomon writes to us reveal two paths in life: 1) The world's path that leads to death (Prov. 16:25); and God's path that leads to life and blessing (Prov. 24:3-4).

The Duty of Joy Brian Fisher Philippians Philippians 4:4-9 Notes Slides
Joy is not merely the result of certain actions or attitudes. Joy is a command. Joy is duty. So then, how do we obey this command? By finding our joy in the Lord. Do not be deceived by our adversary. Any attempt to find joy in anything other than Jesus Christ will result in fear, anxiety and frustration. True joy, joy that transcends all earthly circumstances, can only be found in Him.

Stress, anxiety, worry... these are often our companions in this hectic world. But while we can't eliminate stress from our lives, we can learn to manage it well; to reduce and gradually replace it with the supernatural peace of God. In this passage, Paul gives us a four-step pathway to God's peace: show others grace, practice thankful prayer, discipline your thought-life, and practice obedience to Christ.

The Value of Money Blake Jennings Philippians Philippians 4:10-23 Notes Slides
Few things have as much impact on our lives as money. That's a reality God understands well. He cares deeply about our money and about how we use it, because what we do with our money demonstrates what we truly love and value most in life. So in this final passage of Philippians, a thank-you letter from Paul for the Philippians' recent financial gift, God reveals to us both the power and limitations of our money. Our money can accomplish great things in our lives and in the lives of others if we will only use it wisely.

Learning the Mystery of Contentment Brian Fisher Philippians Philippians 4:10-23 Notes Slides
Contentment... in any and every circumstance, in plenty and in want...is a rare achievement. The only ones who find it are those who put Christ at the very center of life. If pursuing Him and proclaiming His greatness is your reason for living, nothing can touch you. And then, when you stand in His presence some day, you will know the joy of hearing Him say 'Well done,' in the company of those who have chosen to live for Christ above all else.

Can't we all just get along? Reducing and Resolving Conflict Blake Jennings Philippians Philippians 4:2-3 Notes Slides
Conflict comes naturally to the human race. Whether in our marriages, with our parents, with friends, neighbors, or coworkers, we frequently find ourselves in conflict with others. And that conflict always causes pain and stress. So how do we avoid conflict with others? And when conflict does occur, how do we resolve it quickly and as painlessly as possible? In this short but rich passage Paul lays out seven principles for reducing and resolving conflict; principles that will help us find greater peace with one another and greater effectiveness in this life for the Lord.

Reconciled... For the Sake of Christ Brian Fisher Philippians Philippians 4:1-3 Notes Slides
Reconciliation is what God is all about. When His people fail to resolve conflict, the world will not see Jesus. Rather than being known as followers of Christ by our love, we will look just like everyone else. However, when we forgive and restore our relationships, we are personally blessed, and those who are alienated from God receive a beautiful picture of the forgiveness that all can receive through Christ. Therefore...forgive one another, stop demanding payment, live for the reputation of Christ and not the defense of your own rights!

Leadership in Focus Trey Corry 1Peter 1 Peter 5:1-7 Notes Slides

To Know Christ is Life, The Rest is Just Details Blake Jennings Philippians Philippians 3:2-16 Notes Slides
Jesus Christ is everything to us. Our spiritual life begins when we receive the gift of righteousness through faith in Christ. It then grows and expands as we pursue Christ in an ever-deepening, personal relationship. As we come to know Jesus more fully we experience more of His blessings, learn to rest in His peace, become more like Him in every way, and earn reward when we finally see Him face-to-face. Knowing Jesus more is the great goal of life, but it requires us to set aside our distractions, our regret from the past, and our constant tendency to coast on our present progress. So let us encourage one another to press on to know Jesus more.

To Know Christ is Life Brian Fisher Philippians Philippians 3:10-16 Notes Slides
Because we have received the absolutely free gift of Christ's righteousness, we have also received the privilege of knowing Him in an ever-deepening, personal relationship. As we identify fully with Jesus Christ in every way, including suffering for the sake of His name, we come to know the power of His resurrection in our daily lives. This is the great goal of life - to know Jesus Christ fully as we have been fully known. It will require all of our focus and all of our energy. We will experience distractions from lesser goals, regret from the past, and a variety of temptations to quit. Never give up. Press on to know Jesus.

The Real Thing Brian Fisher Philippians Philippians 3:1-9 Notes Slides
The simple message of Easter is always under assault... from the secularized version of bunnies and eggs that trivializes the powerful message of death, burial and resurrection, to the religionized version that adds human contribution to the finished work of Christ. Beware - Satan has always been, and will always be, at work to take our minds away from an empty cross and an empty tomb... Christ triumphant and exalted.

Easter, are you missing it? Blake Jennings Philippians Philippians 2:5-11, 3:4-9 Notes
So many of us miss the point of Easter, the most significant weekend of the entire year. On this date some 2000 years ago, Jesus, the perfect Son of God and our Almighty Creator willingly suffered humiliation and death on a crucifix to pay the penalty for our sins, and then three days later triumphantly rose from the dead in victory. Because of what Jesus did on that first Easter we can finally stop striving to earn our way to God, to merit His love, and can simply cling to Christ in faith knowing that His death and resurrection have earned us infinite righteousness and eternal life.

Work Out Your Salvation! Blake Jennings Philippians Philippians 2:12-18 Notes Slides
God calls us to grow in the likeness of His Son; to "work out" our sanctification. But in the midst of a world as sinful and rebellious as ours, and with a heart as sinful and rebellious as mine, how do I do it? How do I grow up in righteousness? Fortunately, God doesn't leave me alone in this process. My part is to consistently choose to obey Jesus Christ in every area of my life out of a healthy sense of fear, for I will be judged by Him. God's part is to both empower my obedience today and transform my desires so that I want to obey more tomorrow. God calls us to grow in the likeness of His Son; to 'work out' our sanctification. As He works to empower my work, I become a witness for Christ to the world and my obedience becomes a sacrifice of worship to God.

All We Like Sheep Blake Jennings AdditionalSermons Psalm 23 Notes Slides
Psalm 23 was never meant for the inside of a Hallmark card. It was crafted by David to surprise us, to shock us so that we would see clearly the extravagance of God's grace and our desperate helplessness without Him. But to comprehend how shocking this passage is meant to be, we must read it again as if for the first time and must dig in to the background to see it as David's original audience would have seen it.

Refuge in Life's Storms Brad Evans AdditionalSermons Psalm 18 Notes Slides
In Psalm 18, King David reflects back on a period of his life when his enemies were trying to kill him. David desperately cries out to God for help ('My God, my rock in whom I take refuge'). God's response to David gives us tremendous hope and confidence to turn to Him during our time of need. 'He rescued me, because He delighted in me.' (Ps. 18:19)

Becoming One Blake Jennings Philippians Philippians 2:1-11 Notes Slides
In this, one of the most famous passages in the entire Bible, God calls us to live as one; to unify together around our common mission of sharing the gospel. We grow that unity with one another by choosing to love each other as God loves us, by pursuing harmony rather than our own self-interests, by embracing humility that promotes others above self, and by practicing selflessness that cares for the needs of others. Yet none of these comes easily to us! That's why Paul directs us to the stunning example of Jesus Christ, whose humiliation and exaltation motivate us to pursue unity at any price.

Paul joyfully expresses his desire to be released from prison so that he can come and see the church in Philippi again. However, he is hard pressed from both directions because he realizes his time to leave this earth may be at hand. This deeply personal tension creates a teaching moment for Paul. He exhorts his readers, and us today, to above all else exalt (to magnify, to make great, to enlarge) Jesus Christ with our lives. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. (Phil. 1:21)

To live is ______. We fill in the blank with many different things, none of which can satisfy. God won't allow them to satisfy. For Paul, while in prison and facing possible execution, confidence was found in living for Christ. That meant giving his life on behalf of Christ for the advance of the gospel and the spiritual progress of the Philippian believers. How would you fill in the blank today?

Good... Better... or Best? Blake Jennings Philippians Philippians 1:9-11 Notes Slides
So often when we pray we ask God for things that are good, and yet overlook those things that are truly essential. So Paul teaches us in this short passage how to pray for our two most essential needs in life. He prays that we would grow in love for God, for one another, and for the lost; not love as our world sees it, but agape love that sacrifices self for the good of others. And he prays that we would grow to understand God and His Word more deeply and grow in wise discernment of His will. As God answers these two essential needs in our individual lives and in our church, we become a people who greatly glorify God in this world.

Paul gives thanks for the Philippian believers - they have been full participants in the gospel (1:3-8). However, he is not complacent about their future. He wants even more for them. He wants them to lead lives that matter; to discern and choose the best; to live in a manner that reflects the righteousness of Christ, as they love God and one another... all to the glory and praise of God.

We all long for deep relationships - people to walk through all of the triumphs and tragedies of life with us and never abandon us. We all want lives filled with hope and joy and power. But no matter how passionately and energetically we may chase after these things, they always seem to elude us. That is because they are results, by-products, consequences; they are not ends in and of themselves. These things are only found in Christ - pursuing Him and proclaiming His name above all else along with the people of God.

Earthly Occupation of Heavenly Citizens Blake Jennings Philippians Philippians 1:3-8 Notes Slides
Our prayers reveal our theology. Therefore it is no surprise that in this prayer of thanksgiving to God for the church in Philippi, Paul reveals a crucial truth, that God has called all citizens of heaven to devote their lives to the advance of the gospel. This is our privileged occupation on earth; privileged because, first, as we labor to spread the gospel, God binds our hearts together in deep, lasting community with one another, and second, because God promises that our work to advance the gospel will not be wasted, for in His infinite power He will make our efforts an eternal success.

Have you ever struggled with doubt? Have you doubted God's existence or the truth of the gospel? Or have you doubted something the Bible says about God, that He loves you, forgives you, hears you? If so, you are not alone. All believers struggle from time to time with doubt, even such mature saints as Moses, Elijah, and in Luke 7, John the Baptist. We know that we should be sharing our faith, but few of us are doing it on a regular basis. How do we close this gap between knowing about evangelism, and actually practicing it? How do we take something as huge, overwhelming, and scary as evangelism and make it a practical part of our everyday lives? Paul gives us the answer in six practical, relatively easy steps found in Acts 17. To reach the lost, we need to CARE about them, INITIATE with them, ADAPT our message to their needs, FOCUS on the essentials of the gospel, COMMIT to them for the long-haul, and PRAY for them to the God who saves.

It reveals, second, the basis of our incredible hope in this life, because on that day when takes the church as His bride we will experience unparalleled joy and satisfaction that only His love can provide. God's Word is our foundation. But like all things that take effort, to learn from and apply God's Word, we need both the desire and the ability to do it. Why should we want to be in God's Word? Because unlike most anything else in life, we can absolutely depend on it. And more than any other book, seminar, or counselor, it provides the help we desperately need to make our lives work. As we grow in our desire for God's Word, how do we then refine our ability to get more out of it? We grow as students of God's Word as we learn and practice a simple four-step method that helps us clearly observe, accurately interpret, and powerfully apply God's Word.

We hear the word 'worship' all the time and know that it's important, but do we really know what it is? And more importantly, do we really know how to do it? From Psalm 145 we will learn from David first that worship is Surprisingly Simple. It is simply proclaiming to God to ourselves and to others how great He is. Second, we will learn that worship is Sunday to Saturday. Worship must not be limited to a one-hour block on Sunday; we must learn to nurture hearts of worship all week long. David continues to instruct in Psalm 63, where from his hardships we find that Suffering can Strengthen our worship. Finally, we see that worship is Supremely Satisfying, the most satisfying activity we will ever participate in.

Third, we willingly suffer the hardships that come from a faithful life for the sake of eternal reward.

Inequality breeds negative consequences that abound everywhere, and they prevent us from living as lights to those around us. In response, let us return thanks to Him and invite others to share in His grace.

Refreshing Romans Matt Morton Romans Romans Notes Slides
The book of Romans centers on the message of the Gospel, which is the critical message we must understand in order to know the purpose and direction of our lives. Its key themes are: sin leads to death, God saves us by His grace, God empowers us for righteousness, and His grace summons us to worship.

Divine Ophthalmology Blake Jennings Ezra_Haggai_Nehemiah_Malachi Malachi 2:17-4:6 Notes Slides
Just like the Israelites in Malachi's day, we are often limited by short-sighted vision which sees life only as it is at this moment, when God is not yet judging sin or rewarding righteousness. And in that short-sightedness, sin becomes excusable and even reasonable. But in this passage, God corrects our vision so that we can see long-range as He does. God reminds us that His perfect and unbearable justice is coming to earth when Christ returns, and it will utterly destroy His enemies. And he reminds us that on that Day, He will reward our righteous deeds beyond our wildest dreams. So live everyday of this life in light of that Day when Christ returns.

Confession also includes our declaration to God of what He has done for us as our Creator, our gracious promise-maker, our faithful promise-keeper, and our compassionate promise-restorer even after we have sinned.

While the walls remained destroyed, it was physically impossible for the people to worship despite the completion of the temple. Enemies continually threatened the lives of worshippers (4:2). Upon completion of the walls, there was a greater level of security (6:15; 7:1). Now the people could get on with the business of worship. Ezra stepped in at this point to give spiritual direction by reading the Law, so long neglected. The people responded with celebration, confession of their sins, and remembrance of the faithfulness of the Lord.

Nehemiah's determination turned to anger. Attacks from enemies were to be expected, but God's own people hurting one another was reprehensible. The people of the land were called to restore a worshipping community for the glory of God's reputation. How could they do this if some were profiting by the destruction of their brothers? Nehemiah confronted his fellow Israelites, gave them specific directives to remedy the harm they had done, and then he led them by example. He sacrificed for God's people and surrendered his right to personal profit. The result was a unified community, glorifying God together.

Nehemiah gathered strength and discerned God's vision through a lengthy time of prayer (ch. 1). Following the vision God placed in the heart of Nehemiah for Jerusalem's future, this godly servant-leader quietly gathered information, made plans and then planted the seed of hope in the hearts of the leaders around him. God gave the vision first to Nehemiah, but every one of God's servants had a part to play.

The Beginning of a Great Work Part 1: Nehemiah's Perspective Brian Fisher Ezra_Haggai_Nehemiah_Malachi Nehemiah 1:1-4 Notes Slides
In biblical times, the walls of a city held great significance. They represented the local deity's concern for his people and his power to protect them. Broken walls... weak god... great dishonor for both the god and his people. Yahweh, the King, not just of a limited earthly location but of all the universe, was dishonored by the condition of His holy city, Jerusalem. The temple had been restored under the leadership of Zerubbabel the governor and Joshua the high priest and through the exhortation of the prophets Haggai and Zechariah. However, the people were afraid to worship because the city afforded them no protection. Therefore God raised up another generation of leaders, headed by Nehemiah and Ezra and exhorted by the prophet Malachi, to rebuild the walls and reform the worship. As we study the books of Nehemiah and Malachi this semester, may God instruct us in lessons of spiritual leadership and may we discover how we can courageously bring Him honor in our own generation. Our God is strong! Our God deserves all honor and glory!

Christmas for so many of us is not a time of joy but a time of busyness, stress, discouragement, and even grief. Yet as Revelation chapters 4 and 5 help us understand, no one has ever experienced a worse Christmas than Jesus did! He exchanged the beauty, bliss, and perfection of heaven for the humiliation, pain, and suffering of His life among us. And as a result, if Christmas this year finds you less than joyful, then turn to Him who perfectly understands your pain and who has proved His infinite love for you by experiencing His own "worst Christmas!"

Was Jesus Christ warmly received when He first came to earth? On the contrary - He was completely ignored, except by shepherds who were knocked to the ground by dazzling angels and the Magi who saw amazing signs in the stars. A "generous" inn keeper gave the world's pronouncement - "NO ROOM." "NO ROOM" is so often a metaphor for our lives at Christmas. We are able to make room for another shirt, another dress, another gadget, another toy. But is there room for Jesus Christ, God in human flesh, King of Kings and Lord of Lords? Pack Your Bags and Prepare Your Heart Brian Fisher Ezra_Haggai_Nehemiah_Malachi Ezra 8 Notes Slides
Having received his commission from King Artaxerxes, Ezra prepared his fellow exiles for the journey home to discharge their duties to both God and king. The journey proved to be a success, because Ezra prepared his people both spiritually and practically. His appointed task was specific; therefore, he had to assemble the right group of people, people with the necessary skills and character. The journey itself would be a test, so they began the journey with fasting and prayer and concluded it with worship rather than frenetic activity. Observing the example of Ezra, we can ask ourselves, How are we preparing for the journey of life?

Ezra: Skilled Servant of God and King Brian Fisher Ezra_Haggai_Nehemiah_Malachi Ezra 7 Notes Slides
In 458 B.C. Ezra led the second return of exiles to the Promised Land. Because he was trusted, King Artaxerxes (464-424 B.C.) charged him with restoring civil and religious order among his people. Ezra's skill for this role came from his study of God's word (he knew it), his personal application of God's word (he lived it), his ability to pass on these life-giving truths to others of his generation (he reproduced it) and the favor of the Lord empowering him (he understood the source of real change).

Finish the Work Brian Fisher Ezra_Haggai_Nehemiah_Malachi Ezra 5-6 Notes Slides
The work on the Temple stopped from 535-520 B.C. as the people gave in to opposition and apathy. However, as the people began to build again at the encouragement of Haggai and Zechariah, although they once again faced opposition, God confirmed the work of their hands. Darius (522-486 B.C.) received the letter of inquiry from his governing agents, searched the records and responded by upholding Cyrus' earlier decree - provide all protection and all provision necessary for the rebuilding of the Temple of the Lord. When God's work is done in God's timing, nothing can inhibit its progress. In the end, His worship cannot and will not be held back by the strongest of human or angelic forces.

The building of a local, earthly temple was just the beginning. God intends to manifest His glory by much grander dimensions, indeed a worldwide, universal dimension. Earthly rulers will be removed because there can exist no rivalry between God's rule and the rule of mere men. God will vindicate His name, His promises and the expectations of His people by reestablishing the royal line of David through Zerubbabel, His chosen ruler. Although Zerubbabel had failed to accomplish his one objective over the past 16 years, the rebuilding of God's temple, God nevertheless restored him and promised him future authority and blessing.

Even though the people had begun to work on God's temple, they still felt the sting of the consequences of their sin. The positive effects of their realigned priorities would take time. Storehouses were nearly empty because previous harvest had been so poor. It was winter – grapes, figs, pomegranates, and olives had not yet born fruit; seeds had been planted but had not yet sprouted. All they had at this point was the promise of God to bless their efforts. That promise would have to be enough to motivate their continued obedience. They would have to labor in hope, in the confident expectation that God would be good to His word.

On the anniversary of the completion of Solomon's temple, God spoke again through Haggai. It was an inevitable temptation to compare the current work to the glorious temple of the past. Solomon's resources vastly surpassed those of this small remnant. As a result, the work of their hands looked like nothing in comparison. However, the Lord reminds them that the significance of a work derives from His presence and His power, not merely external grandeur. Because of His work in them and through them, the future glory would be far greater than the past.

Spiritual revival, the reawakening of God's people to accomplish His will, is available to all believers and involves three sequential steps. First, God speaks, convicting His people of their sin (vv1-11). Second, God's people respond to His conviction in confession, agreeing with God about the fact of their sin and the seriousness of their sin (v12). Finally, God responds to His people's confession by comforting them with His presence (v13) and empowering them to obey (v14).

The Time has Come Brian Fisher Ezra_Haggai_Nehemiah_Malachi Haggai 1:1-11 Notes Slides
Within two years of returning from exile, the Israelites had constructed the altar and restored sacrifices, but then, because of opposition and complacency, they had failed to make progress in reconstructing the temple. After 16 years (520 B.C.) Haggai brought to them the word of the Lord, attempting to motivate the people to turn from their spiritual apathy and begin again to rebuild God’s place of worship. The Lord reminded them through Haggai that their sense of futility and frustration inevitably proceeded from their commitment to seek first their own comfort rather than the pleasure and glory of the Lord.

What Makes God Angry Matt Morton Romans Romans 1:18-32 Notes Slides
Before we can truly appreciate the good news of Jesus Christ, we must come to terms with God's wrath against our sin.

Properly Paranoid Brian Fisher Ezra_Haggai_Nehemiah_Malachi Ezra 4 Notes Slides
From the days of the Garden of Eden, two kingdoms have engaged in fierce conflict – the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness. Whenever and wherever God has moved to secure worship for Himself, the enemy has also emerged, provoking unrelenting opposition against the people of God. As the first group of returned exiles attempted to establish God's worship by rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem, they immediately faced opposition. This persistent pattern of opposition to God's work through His people continued from the reign of Cyrus (539-530) all the way through to the reign of Artaxerxes I (464-423). God's people should always expect opposition from the adversary and act accordingly.

The book of Romans is an explanation of the Gospel which changed the course of Paul's life and the course of history.

Longing for the Future or Paralyzed by the Past? Brian Fisher Ezra_Haggai_Nehemiah_Malachi Ezra 3 Notes Slides
The people of Israel waste no time in building the altar, as sacrifice is central to communion with God. They enter quickly into the annual cycle of commanded worship, going beyond what is prescribed with their freewill offerings. And as soon as it is practical they lay the foundation of the Temple, signaling a glorious future for the worship of the Lord. Nevertheless, some linger behind, paralyzed by regret over the consequences of past failure, missing out on the celebration of the faithfulness of the Lord. How about you? Are you longing for the future or paralyzed by the past?

God is on the Move Brian Fisher Ezra_Haggai_Nehemiah_Malachi Ezra 1-2 Notes Slides
God is active in human history. He is moving people and nations toward His greatest desire, the worship of His glory. Through the decree of Cyrus, king of Persia, in 538 B.C., God made it possible for His people to return to the Promised Land and restore His worship... not everyone took advantage of the opportunity. Would you have returned or would you have remained behind in the safety and comfort of a foreign land?

Where Are You Headed? Matt Morton College_Life 2 Timothy 2:1-7 Notes Slides

Reviving our Worship and Witness Brian Fisher Ezra_Haggai_Nehemiah_Malachi   Notes Slides
God chose the people of Israel as a kingdom of priests and poured out His blessing upon them so that all the nations of the earth might be drawn to worship God. He chose the land of Canaan from which to spread His glory throughout the earth. Because of Israel's failure to be a light for God among the nations, she was removed from the land as God had promised. However, when she turned back to God in the place of her exile, God once again acted according to His promise and brought back a remnant of the people to reestablish worship and witness for Himself in the Promised Land.

Near and in Need Brian Fisher Parables_and_Miracles Luke 10:25-37 Notes Slides
The most wise and godly teacher to have ever walked the face of the earth, Jesus Christ, confirmed that the essence of life is to love God completely and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, we seek to limit our obligations and justify our actions. Jesus corrects our false assumptions and our self-righteousness. The proper question, we learn, is not, "To whom am I obligated (duty)?" Rather we should ask, "Whose needs can I meet (opportunity)?" I prove to be a good neighbor when I feel compassion for the need and take action.

Surviving the Storms of Life Joel Mathai Parables_and_Miracles Matthew 14:22-33 Notes Slides
As we continue in the series of Parables and Miracles, this message looks at the miracle of Jesus and Peter walking on the water. The setting is a storm, sooner or later we are all bound to face storms in our lives. How will we deal with those storms? Matthew 14:22-33 teaches us valuable lessons in surviving the storms of life.

Confessions of an Arsonist John Jordan Proverbs Proverbs 18:20-21 Notes Slides
Controlling our speech is perhaps the most difficult of the spiritual disciplines. James compares the tongue to a burning fire that is capable of decimating an entire forest, making all of us guilty of arson. Proverbs 18 grants us encouraging and convicting insight into the effects our speech may have in the context of relationships.

A City Within the City John Jordan Proverbs Philippians 1:27-30 Notes Slides
In Philippians 1:27-30, Paul writes to an incipient Philippian community to encourage unity and loyalty to their true Lord. This scandalous text has sweeping implications for the current American church and its largely despondent congregation. How can the church of God become a unified city of God within a secular city?

By This Will All Men Know ... Brian Fisher 1Timothy 1 Timothy 5:1-16 Notes Slides
Paul commands the church, and individual families, to do their duty toward widows, but to do so with caution. Younger widows, who apparently had fallen victim to the false teachers, were exhorted to remarry rather than becoming a financial burden on the church. The older widows who had no one to care for their financial needs were the responsibility of the church or their families. By taking care of this responsibility, believers would remain above reproach and maintain a powerful testimony in the world.

Deacons: The High Calling of Service Brian Fisher 1Timothy 1 Timothy 3:8-13 Notes Slides
One of the great paradoxes of the Christian faith is that greatness is found through sacrifice and service - the one who finds his life loses it, and the one who loses his life finds it. The office of deacon exemplifies this beautiful paradox, while providing a model for all believers to imitate.

Rejection of the King Matt Morton Kingship_of_Christ   Notes Slides
The tragic rejection of Christ resulted in life and victory for those who trust in Him.

Pillar and Foundation of the Truth Brian Fisher 1Timothy 1 Timothy 3:14-16 Notes Slides
The Church is unique. She is the dwelling place of God on earth and the only repository of ultimate Truth. Consequently, it is imperative that she understand, live out, and proclaim the Truth of Jesus Christ in the world.

Lead by Example Brian Fisher 1Timothy 1 Timothy 3:1-7 Notes Slides
Who you are is more important than what you do. By listing the qualifications for the highest office in the church before the duties, Paul applies this principle to the calling of eldership within the house of God. Although all will not become elders, each of us can use this list to examine ourselves and our aspirations.

Miracles Matt Morton Kingship_of_Christ   Notes Slides
The miracles of Christ reassure us that we can trust that Jesus is who He said He was, and that He will do what He promised to do. They reassure us that we can find enough power and authority and deity in Jesus without having to look elsewhere. Jesus is our hope, our miracle, our contact with God today.

God desires, and has made provision, for all people to be saved. He has appointed the Church as the steward of this preeminent truth. However, local churches do not always conduct themselves in such a way that the message of salvation is winsome. We need to be realigned, refocused on our mission - the men (2:8), the women (2:9-15) and the leadership (3:1-13), so that the church is an adornment not a distraction for the gospel.
